Sarah Piel: About the Author

Born in Braunschweig (Lower Saxony/ Germany) in 1983, grown up in Berlin and Schleswig-Holstein,  I would identify  myself as a Northern Light. But in fact, my heart beats for  Berlin that I call my hometown. This is the place where I have learnt how to love, hate and forgive, to remember, forget and regret. And, this is the place where I study Geography, Political Science, and Media & Communication Sciences (Free University of Berlin). With my major study field Geography I focus on developement studies, area studies, urban development and planning as well as on resource managment in particular. However, “all the theory is grey, and green is the golden tree of life”

In 2009, I got the chance to do a 3-month internship at the Environmental Management Department (ERMD) of the City of Cape Town where I was involved in the Green Goal 2010 preparations. Thus, I truly fell in love with the Mother City and I went back  in 2010 in order to see how green the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Cape Town will actually be.  Financially supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Humboldt-Ritter-Penck Foundation of the Association for Geography, I am now doing a master thesis research on how the Green Goal 2010 programme of the City of Cape Town may catalyse sustainable urban development.
